U.S. Navy veteran enjoyed grandchildren

Edward Conrad “Didi” Almasy, 75, of Washington, passed away peacefully Monday, November 25, 2013, in his home in the presence of his loving family.

Mr. Almasy was born December 9, 1937, in Houston, a son of the late John and Anna Gresko Almasy.

He lived most of his life in Canonsburg.

On April 25, 1959, he married his sweetheart, Rose DeJohn, who survives.

Mr. Almasy was a member of St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Canonsburg, and later became a member of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church, Meadow Lands.

He served his country and was a proud member of the U.S. Navy.

Mr. Almasy was a longtime member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge 846, where he held the positions of exalted ruler and southwest district deputy, and was nationally recognized for generating resurgence in membership at Canonsburg Lodge. He was active in promoting youth sports, through coaching “knee-pants” football in Canonsburg and volunteering with Challenge Baseball.

He loved reading, watching Westerns with his grandchildren, as well as fishing, golf and traveling. Mr. Almasy was a well-known fan at all of his grandchildren’s sporting events and activities.

Mr. Almasy was a retired steelworker from Universal Cyclops in Pittsburgh and was self-employed in his own remodeling business.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are his son, Michael E. Almasy and Jane of Canonsburg; two daughters, Maria McGrosky and husband Eric of Clinton and Melanie Faigley and husband John of Canonsburg; two sisters, Mary Vehar of Strabane and Nancy Almasy of Canonsburg; eight grandchildren, Brianne Almasy, Kyle Almasy, Tristan McGrosky, Logan McGrosky, Libby McGrosky, Sam Faigley, Matthew Faigley and Zachary Faigley; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a brother, Thomas Almasy, and a sister, Matilda Debbis.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Sollon Funeral Home Ltd., 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, J. David Sollon, supervisor, Phillip L. Sollon, director. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday, November 29, in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Meadow Lands, followed by burial at 2 p.m. in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township. Full military rites will be accorded by the combined honor guards of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 and American Legion Post 902.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Washington Area Humane Society.

Immaculate Conception Church member

Irene P. Anderson, 93, of Washington, died Sunday, November 24, 2013, in Washington Hospital.

She was born April 8, 1920, in Washington, a daughter of Daniel Passo and Margaret Balog Passo.

Mrs. Anderson was a graduate of Washington High School. A homemaker, she worked at Hazel Atlas during World War II and, later for a time, as a bookkeeper for Montgomery Ward.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church.

Mrs. Anderson loved solving crossword puzzles and refinishing furniture.

On October 8, 1941, in Colorado Springs, Colo., she married Walter P. Anderson, who died July 19, 1991.

Surviving are two sons, John Daniel Anderson of Yorktown and Jamie W. Anderson (Barbara L.) of Washington; a daughter, Judith Anderson Yusko of Claysville; and four grandchildren, Julie A. Yusko, Jay A. Yusko, Jennifer Anderson and Joanna Anderson.

Deceased are two brothers, Jake Passo and Daniel Passo; three sisters, Verna Dubelle, Anne Schlagel and Mary Weltmer; and a son-in-law, James Yusko.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where a blessing service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 30. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery.

Verna Brashear, 93, of Carmichaels, died at 10:10 a.m. Thursday, November 21, 2013, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.

She was born February 28, 1920, in Jacobs Creek, Westmoreland County, a daughter of the late Joseph J. and Augustine C. Valent Lindway.

Mrs. Brashear was a member of Fairdale Free Methodist Church, Carmichaels.

Surviving are two sons, Charles J. “Chuck” Brashear and wife Karen of Ohio and F. Gene Brashear and wife Elaine of Stephens City, Va.; a daughter, Darlene Metcalf of Rocky Ridge, Ohio; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Deceased are her husband, Charles R. Brashear; a grandchild; a daughter, Catherine Burch; a brother, Charles Lindway; four sisters, Mary Walters, Irene C. Wellington, Velma Haley and Shirley Federer; and sons-in-law Ronald Burch and Ernie Metcalf.

Family and friends were welcomed from 10 a.m. to noon, the hour of services, Monday, November 25, in Yoskovich Funeral Home, 724-966-5500, Martin J. Yoskovich, funeral director, 300 South Vine Street, Route 88, Carmichaels. The Rev. Robert Whoolery officiated. Interment followed in Laurel Point Cemetery, Carmichaels.

Lifelong Avella resident was Korean War veteran

Levio “Peachy” Corgnati, 86, of Avella, died Sunday, November 24, 2013, in his home, surrounded by family.

He was born October 29, 1927, in Avella, a son of the late Stefano “Steve” and Ugolina Merlo Corgnati.

Mr. Corgnati was a graduate of Avella High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was employed by Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel in the coke plant for 30 years, retiring in 1989.

Mr. Corgnati was a lifelong resident of Avella.

He was a member of American Legion Bert C. Siders Post 643 of Avella, Avella Sportsmen’s Club and Polar Star Mutual Benefit Society of Avella.

Mr. Corgnati enjoyed hunting, gardening, gambling and spending time with family.

On August 8, 1959, he married Dorothy J. Peterson, who died March 23, 2003.

Surviving are a daughter, Susan Corgnati of Farmington; a son, Mark (Marty Jo) Corgnati of Sturgeon; two grandchildren, Levio and Max Corgnati; a brother, Eldo (Ann) Corgnati of Egg Harbor, N.J.; and a sister, Olga Raimondo of Greensburg.

Friends and family will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Jerome A. Stefkovich Funeral Home Inc., 18 Campbell Street, Avella, PA 15312, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 29. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery, Avella. 1940 – 2013

Charles William Cummins, 73, of South Franklin Township, died Sunday, November 24, 2013, in Donnell House, Washington, following a lingering battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

He was born May 29, 1940, in Washington, a son of Arthur and Ethel Carpenter Cummins.

He was an office worker for the former Ball Glass Co. and later at Chubb Insurance. He was last employed as a van driver for special-needs children.

Mr. Cummins enjoyed watching college and McGuffey High School football and genealogy.

On March 1, 1963, in Taylorstown, he married Ethel Rose Penn, who survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Audra (Casey) Allen of Claysville; a daughter-in-law, April Cummins-Thompson; three grandsons, Charles Cummins II, David Cummins Jr. and Noah Allen; two granddaughters, Tessa Cummins and Avery Allen; two stepgrandsons, Tyler Filby and Ron Nelson; six sisters, Dorothy Clutter, Mona Lesnock, Shirley Phillips, Betty (Ralph) Sprowls, Mary Pettit and Judy (Rocky) McDonough; special cousins John and Carolyn Penn, David and Judy Penn and Marjorie Penn MacNeal; and special friends Ed and Mary Lee Rizor.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are a son, David Cummins Sr.; a brother, Robert Cummins; and two sisters, Frances Lytton and Maureen Main.

There will be no visitation or funeral service. A memorial service will take place at a time and date to be announced.

Wilma Havanis, 81, of Carmichaels, died Sunday, November 24, 2013, in her home.

She was born May 1, 1932, a daughter of the late Calvin and Emily Schmidtke Smitley.

On July 31, 1954, she married Leonard Havanis, who died December 5, 1994.

Mrs. Havanis was a retired garment worker for Greenway Manufacturing in Waynesburg.

She resided most of her life in Carmichaels and attended Mather Christian Church.

Mrs. Havanis was an avid reader and an excellent baker. She enjoyed playing bingo.

Surviving are a daughter, Susan R. Machesky of Carmichaels; two grandchildren, Heather Hunnell and Ryan Havanis; two great-grandchildren, Olivia Hunnell and Kyleigh Ann Havanis; a sister, Emily Henrish of Carmichaels; and a brother, Elmer Smitley of Waynesburg.

Deceased are a son, Robert A. Havanis; a beloved granddaughter, Kaitlyn Machesky; two infant sons, Ronald Leonard Havanis and Brian Scott Havanis; three brothers, Herb, Art and William Smitley; and three sisters, JoAnn Paulson, Pauline Burich and Gert Krieger.

Dedicated husband, father and grandfather

Gabriel B. Hudock, 88, formerly of Monongahela, died Monday, November 25, 2013, peacefully in his home surrounded by his family.

He was born December 1, 1924, to the late Joseph and Catherine Jennings Hudock.

He was a 1942 graduate of Monongahela High School and 1946 graduate of Duquesne University.

Mr. Hudock was owner/operator of Hudock Oil and Gas for 40 years, retiring in 1987.

He was an honorary life member of Knights of Columbus. He was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Monica Hudock; four sons, Brian (Barb) Hudock, Regis Hudock, Gabriel (Gloria) Hudock and Joseph (Susan) Hudock; and eight grandchildren, Meghan, Allie, John, Kaitlyn, Connor, Cameron, Stephen and Colin Hudock.

Deceased are a daughter, Maureen Hudock; a daughter-in-law, Joan Hudock; and five siblings, Marcella Hudock, Joseph Hudock, Mary Cassel Latchaw, Catherine Bain and the Rev. Father Regis Hudock.

Mr. Hudock was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Meadow Lands United Methodist Church member

Hilda L. Komovic, 89, of Washington, died Friday, November 22, 2013, in Donnell House, Washington.

She was born August 11, 1924, in Washington, a daughter of Charles and Ida Cahill Dailey.

Mrs. Komovic was a member of Meadow Lands United Methodist Church and a former member of SNPJ, Meadow Lands.

She enjoyed word-find puzzles and games, and was an avid bingo player.

On April 26, 1947, she married Victor Komovic, who died June 13, 1994.

Surviving are two daughters, Kathleen Whitfield (Tom) of Washington and Eva L. Shade of Corry; a son, Karl Komovic (Debbie Ann) of North Las Vegas, Nev.; seven grandchildren, Victor Whitfield (Rhonda), Beth Hilterbrand (Cecil), Theresa Allen (Bruce), Les Shade (Sue), Kenny Gonzeles, Treva Tyler and Brandon Tyler; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a brother, Charles Dailey, and four sisters, Eva Parrino, Mamie Whiteman, Mildred Whiteman and Anna Ardeno.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 30, in Meadow Lands United Methodist Church.

Pauline C. Meyer, 97, of Washington, died Monday, November 25, 2013, in Kade Health and Rehabilitation Center, Canton Township, following a lengthy illness.

She was born April 11, 1916, in New Martinsville, W.Va., a daughter of William and Alice Sarver Cross.

Mrs. Meyer was a member of West Washington United Methodist Church.

She enjoyed ceramics, crocheting, knitting and playing cards.

Mrs. Meyer was instrumental in forming classes for the mentally and physically handicapped.

On April 21, 1946, in Washington, she married Henry A. Meyer, who died May 6, 1981.

Mrs. Meyer was the last of her family of nine siblings.

Surviving are a daughter, Susan (William) Chappo of Washington; a granddaughter, Rebecca (Douglas) Walton; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased is a son, Thomas Edward Meyer.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Hummell and Jones Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, Thomas W. Hummell, supervisor, Douglas M.
