California Borough council accepted a letter of resignation from police officer Terry Childs during a special meeting at the municipal building Thursday.

No reason was given for his resignation. Childs was one of two California police officers suspended in May on allegations he drove a police cruiser to Washington to run an errand on a busy Friday night, leaving one officer to cover the entire borough.

The other officer involved in that incident, Justin Shultz, was charged by California police with official oppression and simple assault Monday for allegedly mistreating a man detained in a holding cell last month.

California resident Marquell Atkinson asked the board for more information regarding Childs and Shultz, saying he has filed complaints against both officers in the past.

The board declined to comment on Shultz, explaining it was a pending legal matter that they could not publicly discuss.
