PITTSBURGH – Rain or shine, hundreds of veterans are expected to head to the North Shore today for the 10 a.m. ceremony dedicating the Southwestern Pennsylvania World War II Memorial on the eve of the 72nd anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the event which caused the United States to enter the war.
Music, prayers by Bishop David Zubik of the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, Rabbi James Gibson of Temple Sinai and the Rev. Dr. Harold T. Lewis, retired pastor of Calvary Episcopal Church, and speeches will mark the occasion. South Hills veterans will provide an honor guard.
The city of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County worked with local veterans’ organizations to raise money to develop the site at Riverfront Park.
Conceptualizing the monument were Design Workshop and Larry Kirkland, and construction began in May of this year. The state legislature approved more than $2 million for the memorial, which also received significant private donations.
The organizers have set up a small endowment for the upkeep of the memorial.
Following the ceremony, the Rivers Casino is offering those who are age 21 and older and who have an event program to attend a complimentary lunch in the Grand View Buffet from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A shuttle will provide transportation to the casino.
