Pa. residents sue FirstEnergy over impoundment

BEAVER (AP) – Fifteen Western Pennsylvania residents have sued FirstEnergy Corp. in federal court, claiming a 1,700-acre impoundment has leached chemicals and contaminated groundwater.
The Beaver County Times reports the suit claims that Little Blue Run has leached arsenic, sulfates and chlorides into nearby waterways, released noxious odors, and caused wet yards and shifting foundations.
Little Blue Run is located in Beaver County and Hancock County, W.Va. It’s served as the disposal site for FirstEnergy’s Bruce Mansfield coal plant in Shippingport since 1974.
FirstEnergy officials say the suit is under review by company attorneys.
The residents’ suit was filed Dec. 5. It’s nearly identical to one filed by more than 60 West Virginia residents in October.
The company plans to close Little Blue by 2016 under a consent decree with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
