Marine Corps veteran

Edwin Lee Andrew, 82, of Washington, was called home to his Lord, Sunday, December 1, 2013, in Washington Hospital, following a brief illness.

He was born March 25, 1931, in Washington, a son of Albert Edwin Andrew and Nora Eustis Andrew.

Mr. Andrew was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

He was a 1949 graduate of Trinity High School and a 1953 graduate of Waynesburg University, with a degree in business.

Mr. Andrew was member of Faith United Presbyterian Church.

He was an avid sports fan, dartball player, golfer and especially enjoyed watching his four grandchildren participate in various sports. His favorite thing to do was spend time with his family.

Mr. Andrew was a human resources director for more than 50 years. Upon his retirement, he was the shuttle driver for DoubleTree hotel in Meadow Lands.

On November 11, 1961, he married Nancy Carroll, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Scott Edwin (Victoria) Andrew of Bethel Park; a daughter, Sonja (Paul) Andrew Heidish of Washington; a brother, James E. (Jenny) Andrew of Espyville; four grandchildren, Tyler and Kendra Andrew and Peyton and Allyson Heidish; a brother-in-law, Donald G. Emery; five nephews, Eric (Darla), Jon (Ann Marie), Joe (Becky) and Joel Andrew and Bryan Emery; and a niece, Kristin Emery.

Deceased are a daughter, Sharon and sisters-in-laws Linda Andrew and Marilyn Emery.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 5, in Faith United Presbyterian Church, 900 East Beau Street, Washington. Arrangements are being handled by William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington.

1965-2013

Richard G. Bauduin Jr., 48, of Colliers, W.Va., died Saturday, November 30, 2013.

He was born October 28, 1965, in Washington, a son of Richard G. Bauduin Sr. of Avella and the late Patricia J. Babish Bauduin.

Mr. Bauduin was a 1984 graduate of Burgettstown High School.

He was employed as a machinist at Ross Mould of Washington for the past 23 years.

Mr. Bauduin lived in Colliers for the past 14 years and always enjoyed keeping busy around the house.

Surviving are a son, Adam Richard Bauduin of Wellsburg, W.Va.; two sisters, Patty (Paul) Lukon of Lake Havasu, Ariz., and Sherry Bauduin of Washington; a brother, Robert Bauduin of Avella; and his companion, Jana C. Weatherly of Colliers.

Deceased, in addition to his mother, is a sister, Tina Marie Bauduin.

Loretta E. Bostich, 76, of Ellsworth, died Sunday, December 1, 2013.

Former attorney, was avid reader

Frank A. Conte, 84, of Washington, died Saturday, November 30, 2013, in Donnell House, Washington.

He was born April 25, 1929, in Monongahela, a son of Antonio and Rose Iovino Conte.

Raised in Monongahela, he was a 1947 graduate of Monongahela High School and a graduate of Pennsylvania State University and Pittsburgh School of Law.

Mr. Conte was admitted to practice in the Court of Common Pleas of Washington County in 1958 and thereafter admitted to the Appellant Courts of Pennsylvania, as well as the Supreme Court of the United States and various federal appellant courts. For two years, he served as law clerk for three judges of the Washington County Court of Common Pleas. He served for many years as attorney for the Redevelopment Authority of the County of Washington, participating in a wide range of community development, economic development and housing projects. He served as trial attorney in contract and personal injury cases, represented estate fiduciaries in Orphans Court and was solicitor for the Register of Wills for 20 years. For more than 50 years, he privately practiced law in the city of Washington.

Prior to admission to the bar, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a cryptanalyst with the Army Security Agency for three years.

He served as president of the Washington County Bar Association, in which he participated on many committees. He served as president of the Family Service of Washington County and on other community boards, such as Heart Association, Red Cross and Mental Health Association. He served for many years as a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association Committee on Professional Responsibility.

Mr. Conte was a racquet sports enthusiast. He was especially passionate about tennis, as well as being an avid reader and student of history. Above all, the high point of his life was the love of his entire family.

Surviving are his wife, Marilyn Snode Conte, with whom he celebrated 58 years of marriage November 19, 2013; a daughter, Johanna Conte of Wyoming, Ohio; two sons, Christopher Conte and wife Sabine Barcatta of Logan, Utah, and Jonathan Conte and wife Mary Louise of Loveland, Ohio; six grandchildren, Alexandra and Steven Mieczkowski and Marcus, Cameron, Ethan and Adrian Conte; and two sisters, Jean Bennett of Pittsburgh and Edith Natalini and husband Robert of Belle Vernon.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are five sisters and two brothers, Frances Conte, Margaret D’Orsogna, Helen Breen, Anne Dougherty, Louise Griffith, John Conte and Armond Conte.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Frye Funeral Home Inc., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela, where prayers will begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday, December 6, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Damien of Molokai Parish, St. Anthony Church, Monongahela, with the Rev. William Terza, as celebrant. Committal services and interment will follow in Monongahela Cemetery.

WWII Navy veteran

Charles R. Gerwell, 97, of Fallowfield Township, died Monday, December 2, 2013, in his home.

He was born June 2, 1916, in Cokeburg, a son of Charles and Josephine Miskiel Gerwell.

Mr. Gerwell retired from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Allenport plant.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.

Mr. Gerwell was a member of Holy Ghost Byzantine Church in Charleroi.

He was an avid gardener and enjoyed taking care of his fruit trees and vegetable garden.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, John and Diane Gerwell of Fallowfield Township; a daughter and son-in-law, Monica Gerwell and Timothy Tomasko of Pittsburgh; and two grandchildren, Hilary and husband Jimmy Johnson and Derek Gibino.

Deceased are his wife, Elizabeth Chelena Gerwell, who died in 2002; two brothers, Stanley and Wallace Gerwell; and a sister, Josephine McMahan.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Melenyzer-DuBarr Funeral Homes and Cremation Services Inc., 825 Fallowfield Avenue, Charleroi. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, December 5, in Holy Ghost Byzantine Church, Charleroi, with the Rev. James Ragan, as celebrant. Interment will follow in Mt. Macrina Cemetery, Uniontown. Member of Green Valley Church of God

Margaret A. Havanas, 90, of Clarksville, died Sunday, December 1, 2013, in Juniper Village at Forest Hills.

She was born January 5, 1923, in Fredericktown, a daughter of the late Samuel Hugh and Sarah Maxwell Adamson.

Mrs. Havanas was a 1940 graduate of East Beth High School.

Retiring in 1969, she worked for Southwest Pennsylvania Water Authority for many years.

For 65 years, she was a member of Green Valley Church of God in Carmichaels. She was past president of Mary Martha Joy Fellowship and the Joyful Christian Fellowship and was an Adult Sunday School teacher for more than 30 years.

She enjoyed biking, walking, German shepherds and solitaire. She loved her family, reading the Bible and was generous in supporting ministries.

On May 18, 1946, she married Henry W. “Bill” Havanas, who died May 11, 2002.

Surviving are a son, William Hugh Havanas (Hope) of Patasaka, Ohio; four grandchildren, Jennifer Catullo, Deborah Catullo, Rebecca Cade and Jeremy Havanas; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Michailides of Grafton, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to her parents and husband, are a daughter, Margie Farrier; two brothers, Daniel and Harry Adamson; and two sisters, Anabel Adamson and Beulah Jean Orlandi.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Greenlee Funeral Home, 42 Bank Street at Crawford Road, Fredericktown, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 5, with the Rev. Member of First United Methodist Church

Bruce R. Leavitt, 63, of Washington, passed away Sunday evening, December 1, 2013, in Donnell House, Washington.

He was born October 25, 1950, in Detroit, Mich., a son of the late Harold D. Leavitt and Carmen E. Reynolds Leavitt.

Mr. Leavitt was a 1968 graduate of Southgate High School and received his bachelor of science in geological engineering from Michigan Technological University in 1973.

He worked in the mining industry throughout his career in various capacities, including mining engineer, corporate environmental hydro geologist for Consol Inc., specializing in mine flooding, mine drainage production and more recently with Trompe Technology with mine drainage treatment projects.

Deceased is a sister, Cathy Mae (Leavitt) Ringey, formerly of Ferndale, Mich.

Surviving are his loving wife of 38 years, Kathleen Krebs Leavitt, and children Rebecca (Richard) Hollerman of Murrysville and Gregory Leavitt of Washington.

Mr. Leavitt will be missed by his grandchildren Benjamin and Samantha Hollerman.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Washington, where he served on the trustee committee and the building committee.

Music brought him lifelong enjoyment. He started singing in the church choir with his mother and his sister and continued with the First Church choir. He especially loved singing with the Washington Festival Chorale, where he served on the board of directors. He will be fondly remembered for wearing a top hat and singing for friends and customers at The Candle Tree Farm, which he and his wife began in 1985.

Mr. Leavitt was grateful for the loving support he received over the last two-and-a-half years of his illness and looked forward to the salvation and redemption offered by Jesus Christ.

St. Ignatius Church member

Joan C. Mocniak, 76, of Bobtown, passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2013, in Rolling Meadows Care, Waynesburg.

She was born October 22, 1937, in Bobtown, a daughter of the late Frank J. Mocniak and Sophia Tokarsky Mocniak.

Miss Mocniak was a member of St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church in Bobtown.

She retired after 40 years as an office manager for Dorsey and Whitney Law firm of Washington, D.C.

Surviving are a brother, Frank Mocniak of Garards Fort; two sisters, Delores Walcek of Bethany Beach, Del., and Pearl Moski of Carlsbad, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and until 9:30 a.m., the time of service, Saturday, December 7, in Louis E. Rudolph Funeral Home, Thomas B. Rudolph, director/supervisor, 15 Main Street, Point Marion, 724-725-5256, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, with the Rev. Lawrence V. Holpp, as celebrant. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park, Point Marion. A parish wake service will be held Friday evening in the funeral home.

Avid sports fan

David Lee Wyland, 56, of Washington, died Sunday, December 1, 2013, in Washington Hospital.

He was born November 6, 1957, in Washington, a son of Delores Hoyle of Washington.

Mr. Wyland was a 1975 graduate of Washington High School. He went on to work for UPS Freight for 30 years.

He was an avid sports fan.

Mr. Wyland was a member of Fraternal Order of Bears, Lodge 83, Meadow Lands.

On November 15, 1975, in Washington, he married Vicki Nakoneczny, who survives.

Also surviving, in addition to his wife and mother, are two sons, Joshua Wyland of Pittsburgh and Eriek Wyland of Washington; two brothers, Michael (Kathy) Wyland of Monongahela and Thomas (Janet) Hello of Washington; a sister, Terry (Robert) Schroeder of Washington; and a grandson, William David Wyland.

Deceased are a brother, Clint Wyland; a sister, Tina Howard; and a sister-in-law, Luann Toth.
