PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A cat nearly burned to death has been released from a veterinary hospital and been adopted by a Philadelphia firefighter.

That man, Lt. Stephen Paslawski, tells KYW-TV he’s seen how fire can injure animals, which is one reason he adopted the cat — who he’s calling “Campbell” — on Thursday night.

The cat had to have two surgeries at Penn Vet’s Ryan Hospital.

The cat was found badly burned in the city’s Olney section Nov. 10.

Tips and surveillance video have led police to charge 21-year-old Tyrique Hall and 18-year-old Jose Sanchez with animal cruelty. One witness allegedly heard one of the men say, “I put a lot of fluid on it” after seeing the flaming cat running by.

The suspects have pleaded not guilty.
