SHELOCTA (AP) – A deputy coroner says a man who tried to rescue a dog from a rural Western Pennsylvania house fire has died.

Armstrong County Deputy Coroner Brian Myers was not immediately releasing the man’s name while his relatives were contacted.

But the deputy coroner says from the scene of the fire in Plumcreek Township that investigators learned the man and his cousin made it out of the house safely about 2 a.m. Wednesday.

But Myers says the victim heard the dog yelping and went back into the house to save the animal, only to be killed himself.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, but there was no sign that it was of suspicious origin.
