There were plenty of golden moments for juniors in the girls Class AA portion of the PIAA Track & Field Championships in May at an unseasonably cold Seth Grove Stadium in Shippensburg.
Washington’s Alyssa Wise pulled off a rare double in the sprints, Fort Cherry’s Jenna Lucas followed the lead of a former teammate and California’s Kailyn Clancy set a bit of school history.
Wise won a pair of state titles, taking first place in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and earning the title of fastest girl in the state. Wise finished the 100 with a blazing time of 11.85 seconds and the 200 in 24.85.
Lucas succeeded Jessie Merckle, her good friend and former teammate, as PIAA champion in the javelin by winning the gold medal with a throw of 147-1, which came in the semifinals.
Clancy won the first track and field gold medal in California history when she defeated the competition in the shot put, throwing 40-11¼ in less-than-ideal conditions that included strong winds.
