Member of Nazareth Church enjoyed cooking

Johnnie Mae Dates, 97, of Washington, passed away Wednesday, December 4, 2013, in Humbert Lane Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre, South Strabane Township.

She was born May 2, 1916, in Johns, Ala., a daughter of the late Charles McKenzie and Jimmie McKenzie.

Mrs. Dates grew up in Bessemer, Ala., where she was married to the late Freeman Collins. She moved to Washington and was employed at Washington Hospital, where she met and later married James Winegarner. She later married John Dates. Her husbands are deceased.

She was a member of Nazareth Baptist Church in Washington, where she served on the usher board.

Mrs. Dates enjoyed cooking, fishing and crocheting. After her retirement from the hospital, she worked with the Headstart program as the cook, until her retirement.

Deceased, in addition to her parents and husbands, are brother Horace McKenzie; sisters Jessie Smith and Mattie Holland; and daughter Norma Jean Winegarner.

Surviving are sons Charles Collins (Karen) of Alaska and Alan Dates (Shar), Albert Dates (Velma) and John Dates, all of Washington; grandchildren Anelle Rose, Aaron Dates, Amy Dates, Justin Dates and Keilan Dates; great-grandchildren Jamar, Jarell and Alyvia; goddaughter Clara Candice Fisher; and several other relatives and friends.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Nazareth Baptist Church, 123 North Lincoln Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 12. Interment will follow immediately in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray. Arrangements have been entrusted to Lantz Funeral Home, 121 Ridge Avenue, Washington. Condolences may be sent at www.lantzfh.com.
