AMBRIDGE – A part-time police officer in western Pennsylvania has been charged with buying drugs and passing on information about investigations to local drug dealers.

Court papers show that 29-year-old Andrew Wanto of Fair Oaks was arrested Tuesday. He was a part-time officer with the Ambridge police department. That’s about 15 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.

Ambridge police Chief James Mann says he’s saddened and disappointed by the charges and that he asked for and received Wanto’s resignation Tuesday night before he was arrested at the police station.

No attorney was listed on court papers, and a number listed under Wanto’s name was not in service.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 24.
