Waynesburg comeback falls short

GREENSBURG – Pitt-Greensburg had five players score in double figures and the Bobcats held off a furious late-game comeback by Waynesburg to edge the Yellow Jackets, 79-75, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game.
Pitt-Greensburg (4-3) has won four in a row. Waynesburg (4-5) has lost three in a row.
UPG led 29-20 at halftime as Waynesburg shot only 29 percent from the field in the half. The Bobcats padded their advantage to 21 points at 62-41 with 13 minutes remaining. Waynesburg then put together a comeback that cut UPG’s lead to single digits at 73-64 on a layup by Kenny Klase with 4:33 remaining.
Another layup by Klase with 55 seconds to play pulled the Yellow Jackets to within 76-73. Following a missed shot by UPG, Waynesburg had a chance to tie but misfired on a three-pointer. The Bobcats’ Rocco Contristano then made one of two free throws with nine seconds left, and Jason Propst’s layup with four seconds remaining pulled Waynesburg to within 77-75.
Contristano then sealed the win for UPG by making two free throws.
Contristano, Marcus Thomas and Jerrell Figuero each scored 13 points for the Bobcats. Jarrett Shannon and Mike Connelly each had 10 points. Thomas had 12 rebounds.
Klase led Waynesburg with a game-high 23 points in 26 minutes of playing time.
Casey Hope scored 12 points, Thomas Ellis came off the bench to score 11 and Propst had 10 points and 12 rebounds.
