The past year in local sports had its share of ups and downs. There were many championships celebrated, enough stories of memorable team and individual performances to fill multiple scrapbooks and milestone events that left us amazed.
Among the highlights was Canon-McMillan putting together one of the most impressive high school wrestling seasons in the country, winning two state team titles and crowning three individual champions. South Fayette beat the odds and won a PIAA football title in record-setting fashion and Canon-McMillan won a state softball championship in an epic extra-inning game.
There also were headlines made in courtrooms and on trainer’s tables, which left us discussing transfers, eligibility and what could have been.
Unfortunately, as much as 2013 will be remembered for championship performances, it also will be associated with eligibility cases, injuries, forfeits and the death of one of Washington County’s greatest athletes.
