Jack B. “Bus” Watkins, 85, of Lakeland, Fla., entered into eternal rest Wednesday, December 12, 2012, due to heart failure.

He was retired from Goodyear Tire Co., after 27 years, and was married to Sue Blaker, his childhood sweetheart, for 62 years. They never had children, but in 1978 the Lord tugged on their heart strings to open their home as an emergency shelter for abused children, which they did for 12 years. Then the Lord asked them to take in drug-dependent newborns and they became a team, caring for the newborns until they became free of drugs and were put up for adoption. Mr. and Mrs. Watkins retired in December 2010, after having a total of 785 children in their home.

A celebration memorial to honor Mr. Watkins was held Monday at First Assembly Ministries Church, 1400 East Canal Street, Mulberry, Fla., officiated by Pastor Dan Turpin and special remarks by Hazel Hetrick. In place of flowers, make donations to First Assembly Ministries, P.O. Box 496, Mulberry, FL 33860.
