South Fayette honors commissioner
John Phoennik was named acting chief of the South Fayette Police Department by the township commissioners, after they formally accepted the retirement of Chief Louis Volle at last week’s meeting.
Phoennik previously served as police captain in the department. He started his position as acting chief Friday.
Also at the meeting, the municipal building was officially renamed the Thomas J. Sray Muncipal Building after the longtime commissioner. Sray, who did not run for re-election last year, served as a commissioner for 20 years.
“He is definitely an inspiration,” said Ryan Eggleston, South Fayette Township’s manager. “He’s been instrumental in so many things in the township,” Eggleston said.
The board discussed the intergovernmental agreement between the township and the South Fayette School District regarding a school resource officer. Eggleston said a copy of the agreement will be sent to the school district and the officer will be an employee of the township’s police department. That officer has not been named.
Earlier this year, the school district was awarded a grant for the resource officer. Eggleston said the matter is expected to be on the agenda for the school board’s next meeting.
