A second Peters Township resident told police his identity was stolen and a false income tax return was filed, township police said Tuesday. Another resident reported a similar incident about a week ago.
The first incident was reported at 11:55 a.m. March 28, when the resident called the Internal Revenue Service with a question and was told a tax return was filed under his Social Security number, but a different name. The $8,500 return was directly deposited in a separate bank account, police said.
Another resident reported at 3:55 p.m. Monday that a telephone call to the IRS revealed a return was filed under the resident’s name and Social Security number.
Township police Chief Harry Fruecht said two similar incidents involving false returns and identity theft in less than 10 days is disconcerting. Police do not know where or how the identities were stolen.
Fruecht urges everyone to keep personal information, such as Social Security numbers, secure.
Both residents were instructed to notify the IRS.
