Three people, including two employees of the state Department of Environmental Protection, were injured in a head-on crash Tuesday afternoon in Smith Township.

Police Chief Bernie LaRue said a car driven by Nation Whittington, 18, of Chester, W.Va., was in the 200 block of Route 18 when it crossed the center line, colliding with the state-owned vehicle driven by Amanda Schmidt, 32, of Freedom.

Jeffrey Jones, 59, of West Middlesex, a passenger in Schmidt’s vehicle, was taken to UPMC-Mercy hospital for treatment of head injuries. Schmidt and Whittington were taken to Weirton (W.Va.) Medical Center.

LaRue said Jones and Schmidt are DEP employees. Charges are pending against Whittington, who the chief said was headed for work at a gas well site.
