The state police fire marshal is investigating the cause of a fire that heavily damaged a home early Tuesday at 421 Burton Ave. in Washington.

City fire Chief Linn Brookman said Dominic Cecchini, his wife, Tiffany, and their 18-month-old son, Eilo, were asleep in a second-floor bedroom when a neighbor awakened them at 3:47 a.m. when a fire was discovered at the front of their home.

Brookman said the fire started on the front porch and spread through the front wall to the living room and dining room. He said the fire also extended to a bedroom on the second floor and attic.

The fire chief said the cause of the fire is not considered suspicious, though the fire marshal is still working to determine the cause. Brookman described the damage as heavy.

The family was able to get out of the home. No injuries were reported.

The rapid intervention team from Peters and North Strabane Township fire departments assisted while firefighters from North Franklin Township were on standby at the city station.
