Boys soccer
Dylan Stewart and Logan Crowe combined for six goals Sunday, sparking McGuffey to a 7-0 victory over Waynesburg in the championship game of the Chartiers-Houston tournament.
Stewart had a hat trick in the first half as the Highlanders (2-0) led 4-0 at intermission.
Nate Kler had the other goal for the McGuffey and goalkeeper Sam Stout kept Waynesburg (1-1) scoreless by stopping five shots.
n Bentworth had the offense rolling Saturday for an 8-0 non-section victory against Washington.
The win was the first for new coach Nick Marlarbi and the program’s 250th victory.
Bentworth forged a 6-0 lead at halftime on Ryan Moessner’s hat trick and single goals by Ryan Colbert, Andrew Vipperman and John Scott. Moessner had five points in the half with two assists. Colbert also had two assists.
Moessner picked up his third assist when he set up Colbert’s goal in the second half. Scott scored his second goal of the match from Gaige Davenport’s assist.
DJ Hays and Paxton Thomas combined to make four saves to preserve the shutout.
n Waynesburg scored three first-half goals and the defense shut down host Chartiers-Houston 3-0 for a non-section victory.
Ryon McCartney scored goals at 8:32 and 4:02 on assists by Nate Bauza and Dylan Pester. Owen Haught was set up by Dalton Taylor for the opening goal.
n Nate Kler scored two goals as MCGuffey opned the season with a 4-0 victory over Steel valley in the Chartiers-Houston tournament.
n Peters Township used goals by Adam Smiga and Jeven Kelly to defeat Bethel Park 2-0 in the season opener Saturday. Indians goalkeeper Markus Bizyak kept the Black Hawks off the scoreboard with the shutout.
Girls soccer
Chartiers-Houston took control early and went on to a 6-1 victory over McGuffey on Sunday in the championship match of the Bucs’ season-opening tournament.
Ella Richey and Amelia Brose each scored two goals to lead the Bucs’ charge. Ali Wingard and Ava Capozzoli tallied the other goals.
McGuffey’s lone score came on a penalty kick by Hanna McDonald.
Brose, Capozzoli and Mia Reddix each scored a goal on Saturday, powering Chartiers-Houston to a 3-1 win over Beth-Center in the opening round of the tournament.
Kendall Welsh tallied the lone goal for the Bulldogs.
n Peters Township was a 5-0 winner at South fayette on Saturday.
The Indians’ Ella Neupaver had a goal and an assist while Lucia Trapanotto, Julia Spergei, Paige Malley and Milena Gill each foudn the net with shots.
n Canon-McMillan opened its season with a 3-0 loss to Montour as Grace Bannon scored two goals for the Spartans.
California wins LL World Series
Louis Lappe hit a walk-off homer and California beat Curacao 6-5 in the Little League World Series championship on Sunday, despite giving up a four-run lead.
Louis flipped his bat and threw his arms in the air as he trotted around the bases, leaping onto home plate before he was greeted by his teammates surrounding the batter’s box. The leadoff hitter in the bottom of the sixth inning, Louis lofted the second pitch he saw just beyond the left field fence.

Arizona State has issued a self-imposed one-year bowl ban amid an NCAA investigation for possible infractions incurred under former football coach Herm Edwards.
The ban is a preemptive step as the NCAA investigates the Sun Devils for alleged recruiting violations during the COVID-19 pandemic.
