Byron wins at Texas Motor Speedway
William Byron took the lead for the first time after the final restart with six laps left to win at Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday, advancing to the round of eight in the NASCAR playoffs while giving Hendrick Motorsports its 300th victory.
With Bubba Wallace and Chase Briscoe battling for the lead, Byron was able to get underneath both of them before finishing that first lap and staying there.
The top five finishers were all playoff contenders, with Ross Chastain second, ahead of Wallace, Christopher Bell and Denny Hamlin. Retiring driver Kevin Harvick was sixth and playoff driver Brad Keselowski seventh.
Girls soccer
Ali Wingard scored three minutes into Saturday’s non-section match for Chartiers-Houston, as the Buccaneers blanked South Side, 2-0.
Chartiers-Houston (5-1, 9-1) added an insurance goal late in the second half when Amelia Brose sent a cross that was retrieved by Ava Capozzoli, who blasted a shot into the corner of the net for a 2-0 lead.
Grace McAvoy stopped five shots to earn the clean sheet. The Buccaneers return to action tonight in section play against Beth-Center.
Boys soccer
Joey Rodriguez’s brace provided enough offense for Beth-Center in a 3-1 victory over Preston County (W.Va.) on Saturday in non-section play.
Nekoda Bundy also scored for the Bulldogs, who had a 2-0 halftime advantage.
Beth-Center improved to 7-4 overall.
Chartiers-Houston defeated South Side in overtime, 2-1, on Saturday in non-section play at Chartiers-Houston.
