Remembering a deadly day

On October 23, 1983, 241 United States military personnel, including 220 Marines, 18 sailors and three members of the Army, were killed when a terrorist drove an explosives-laden truck into the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon.

Shortly thereafter, another terrorist in a similar attack killed 58 French paratroopers. Civilians were killed as well.

It was the single deadliest day for the Marine Corps since the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II.

Forty years later, former President Donald Trump said at rally, “Hezbollah is very smart.”

That’s the same Donald Trump supported by the Washington County Republican Party to be the commander in chief of the U.S. military.
