Mitrik’s layup leads CH over Freedom, 33-31

Mia Mitrik scored the game-winning basket with 11 seconds remaining and Chartiers-Houston held off Freedom, 33-31, on Wednesday in the Burgettstown Tournament in girls basketball action.

Mitrik’s basket was two of her 10 points. After her basket, the Bulldogs turned the ball over, but the Buccaneers had a turnover of their own before Shaye Bailey missed the final shot.

Bailey led Freedom and the game in scoring with 13 points.

Allison Wingard had 12 points for Chartiers-Houston, who trailed by six at halftime before rallying for the victory. Mylie McCrerey made a layup with a minute to go to put the Buccaneers up by two before Bailey tied the game with two free throws.

Fort Cherry 54, Steel Valley 9

Fort Cherry jumped out early and never looked back in a victory in the McGuffey Tournament.

Raney Staub had 17 points and Brooke Cornali added 12.

Waynesburg 42, Winter Park (Fla.) 29

Kaley Rohanna had 15 points in Waynesburg’s victory over Winter Park (Fla.) on Wednesday in the KAS Tournament in Orlando.

Teammate Peyton Cowell had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the undefeated Raiders (8-0).

Bentworth 60, Propel Montour 7

The Bearcats’ Amber Sallee scored a career-high 28 points in the home team’s victory at the Bentworth Tournament.

Teammate Gianna Brown had 10 points and 9 rebounds. Sallee also had 5 assists.

The Bearcats had a 19-2 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.

Keystone Oaks 64, Burgettstown 45

The Blue Devils battled back after trailing early, but the Eagles were too much in a victory at the Burgettstown Tournament.

Kaitlyn Nease led Burgettstown and the game in scoring with 20 points but fouled out early in the fourth quarter.

Laney Wagner (17) and Bailey Rieg (11) paced the Blue Devils in scoring.

OLSH 42, Belle Vernon 26

Kenzi Seliga had 10 points for the Leopards, but the Chargers were too much for Belle Vernon in the California Hoopfest.

South Side 63, Ringgold 28

Naomi McNary scored 11 points for the Rams but South Side had a seven-point lead heading into the second quarter en route to a victory Wednesday night.

Brentwood 45, Jefferson-Morgan 6

Brentwood’s defense held down the Rockets in a victory Wednesday night at the Carmichaels Lions Club Christmas Tournament.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Jefferson-Morgan 56, Beth-Center 50

Beth-Center had an eight-point lead after the first quarter, but Jefferson-Morgan outscored the Bulldogs by 14 in the final three periods for a victory on Wednesday in the Carmichaels Lions Club Christmas Tournament.

Beth-Center’s Brody Tharp scored 15 points. Teammate Jason Zellie added 14 and Jonah Sussan put in 9.

The Rockets outscored the Bulldogs, 14-8, in the second, 12-11 in the third and 19-12 in the fourth.

West Greene 46, Bentworth 45

West Greene edged the hosts in overtime on Wednesday night in the Bentworth Tournament.

The Pioneers had a 12-5 lead after the first, but the Bearcats outscored West Greene, 9-7, in the second and 15-10 in the third to tie the game at 29-29 heading into the fourth. Both scored 12 in the fourth and the Pioneers had a 5-4 edge in the overtime period.

Bentworth had the ball and was setting up a last-second shot but West Greene stole the ball and held on.

The Bearcats’ Ben Hays had a game-high 29 points.

The Pioneers’ Parker Burns (14), Lane Allison (13) and Matt Wassil (10) were in double figures.

Trinity 64, Hickory 57

Trinity had four players in double figures in Wednesday’s victory over Hickory in the Trinity Christmas Tournament.

The Hillers’ Caden Hathaway had 15 points and teammate Tyler Johnson made four 3-pointers on his way to 14 points. Trinity’s Jonah Williamson (14) and Jacob Dunkle (12) were double-digit scorers.

Hickory’s Rylan Dye and Ryan Robich tied for high-game scoring honors with 16. Rocich had four 3-pointers.

Canon-McMillan 60, Albert Gallatin 40

Eamon O’Donoghue scored a game-high 25 points in the Big Macs’ victory over the Colonials on Wednesday in the Trinity Christmas Tournament.

Teammate Roman Koenmund added 12 points.

Both teams scored 15 points in the opening period before a 20-9 advantage for Canon-McMillan in the second quarter provided the Big Macs with a 35-24 halftime lead. Canon-McMillan outscored the Colonials, 14-5, in the third quarter.

Blake White led Albert Gallatin in scoring with 10 points.

Mapletown 60, Carmichaels 58

The Maples outscored the Mikes by 12 in the second half for a victory in the Carmichaels Lions Club Christmas Tournament.

The Mikes had a 23-12 lead after the first quarter and a 35-25 halftime advantage. Mapletown cut the deficit to three heading into the fourth period and a 14-9 edge in the fourth was enough to earn its first victory of the season.

Carmichaels’ Dominic Colarusso led the game in scoring with 34 points.

The Maples had three players in double figures in Jeremiah Mick (18), Roger Gradek (14) and Lucas Stevenson (12).

Charleroi 59, California 33

The host jumped on top early and cruised to a victory Wednesday night in the Charleroi Tournament.

The Cougars’ Jackson Keranko led all scorers with 21 points.

Caden Monticelli scored 9 points for the Trojans.

Charleroi had a 16-5 lead after the first quarter and a 26-15 halftime advantage. The Cougars extended their lead to 48-23 after a 22-8 edge in the third. Charleroi outscored the Trojans by one point in the fourth period.
