Girls basketball: Trinity finds Justice, wins 9th in a row

Macie Justice led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points and Trinity’s defense shut down West Allegheny over the middle quarters for a 63-41 victory Monday night in a Class 5A Section 4 girls basketball game at Hiller Hall.
The win stretched Trinity’s winning streak to nine games. The Hillers are 3-0 in the section and 10-1 overall heading into a key section game Thursday at two-time defending WPIAL champion South Fayette.
Against West Allegheny (0-3, 5-7), Trinity trailed 18-14 after one quarter but held the Indians to only 13 points over the next two quarters. Trinity moved out to a 31-24 halftime lead and extended the advantage to 48-31 after three quarters.
Riley Corrins was the only other player in double figures for Trinity as she finished the night with 10 points.
Emma Ruperto had 12 points for West Allegheny.
Waynesburg 37, Yough 31
Waynesburg overcame a slow start and an off night on the offensive end of the court by using defense to beat host Yough, 37-31, in a Class 3A Section 4 game.
Waynesburg stays unbeaten in section play at 3-0. The Raiders are 12-1 overall.
The Raiders scored only seven points in the first half but took a two-point lead into halftime after holding Yough (1-1, 6-5) scoreless in the second quarter.
Kaley Rohanna and Avery Davis each scored 12 points to keep Waynesburg ahead in the second half. Josie Horne had nine points.
Yough’s Autumn Matthews scored a game-high 14 points.
Chartiers-Houston 63, Frazier 26
Allison Wingard led four Chartiers-Houston players in double figures with 18 points and the Bucs remained unbeaten in Class 2A Section 4 play by beating host Frazier, 63-26.
Chartiers-Houston (4-0, 8-4) led 26-6 after one quarter and cruised from that point. The Bucs had a 38-17 halftime lead and outscored Frazier (1-3, 4-7) by a 13-2 margin in the third quarter.
Amelia Brose followed Wingard in the scoring column with 12 points. Ava Capozzoli tossed in 11 and Ella Richey had 10.
Chloe Harger and Melana Burton each scored 11 points for the Commodores.
Washington 56, Carmichaels 18
Kaprice Johnson and Olivia Woods combined for 37 points as Washington overpowered Carmichaels 56-18 in Class 2A Section 4.
Washington took control of the game early, building a 21-6 lead in the first quarter and a 32-16 edge at halftime. Carmichaels was held to two points in the second half.
Johnson led the way for the Prexies (3-1, 4-7) with 20 points. Woods followed with 17.
Carmichaels falls to 1-2 in section and 2-9 overall.
Wash High has a key section game Thursday at California.
California 34, Bentworth 26
Madyson Morton scored 12 points and California extended its winning streak to five games with a 34-26 victory at Bentworth in Class 2A Section 4.
The win moves California to 3-1 in the section and 6-4 overall.
The Trojans were locked in a 13-13 tie at halftime and led by only 18-17 after three quarters. California outscored Bentworth by a 16-9 margin in the pivotal fourth quarter.
Rakiyah Porter also scored in double figures for the Trojans, finishing with 10 points.
Amber Sallee scored 10 points for Bentworth (3-10).
Burgettstown 46, Fort Cherry 29
Savanna Rush and Kaitlyn Nease each had a double-double, leading Burgettstown to a 46-29 victory over Fort Cherry in a Class 2A Section 2 game played on the Blue Devils’ home court.
The win keeps Burgettstown atop the section at 2-0 and 6-8 overall. Fort Cherry is 2-1 in section and 8-4 overall. The Rangers had a three-game winning streak snapped.
The score was tied 6-6 after one quarter, then Burgettstown outscored Fort Cherry 18-6 in the pivotal second quarter for a 24-12 halftime lead. Six different players scored for the Blue Devils in the second quarter.
Rush finished with a game-high 15 points to go with 10 rebounds. Nease contributed 12 points and grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds.
Brooke Cornali led FC in scoring with 10 points.
McGuffey 45, Brownsville 42
Taylor Schumacher scored a game-high 20 points and McGuffey battled back from a halftime deficit to beat host Brownsville 45-42 in a Class 3A Section 4 contest.
McGuffey (1-2, 10-2) trailed 21-17 at halftime but outscored Brownsville (0-1, 7-5) by a 19-6 margin in the key third quarter.
Ava Clark and Skylar gates each tossed in 18 points for Brownsville.
Laurel Highlands 33, Belle Vernon 28
Laurel Highlands bounced back from its first loss of the season to edge host Belle Vernon 33-28 in Class 4A Section 3.
LH (3-1, 10-1) held the Leopards to eight points in the first half as the Mustangs went to the locker room with nine-point lead.
Arianna Sumpter scored a game-high 13 points for LH and Aierra Jenkins added 10.
Kenzi Seliga led Belle Vernon (3-2, 6-6) with 10 points. Caroline Lee grabbed 11 rebounds.
South Park 68, Charleroi 29
South Park scored 53 points in the first half and went on to a 69-29 victory over host Charleroi in Class 3A Section 4.
The win keeps South Park unbeaten in league play at 3-0 (7-3 overall) ahead of a big section game Thursday at home against Waynesburg.
The Eagles led 28-7 after one quarter and 53-18 at halftime.
Hayley Bennett scored 18 points to lead South Park. Nika Contakos had 12 points and Andrea Kuczma 10.
Belle Carroto paced Charleroi (0-3, 5-6) with 15 points.
South Fayette 69, Montour 44
Juliette Leroux and Erica Hall combined for 49 points as South Fayette rolled to a 69-44 win at Montour in Class 5A Section 4.
Lerouxz led the way for South Fayette with 25 points but Hall was right behind with 24.
Lainey yater added 10 points for the Lions, who outscored Montour in every quarter and led 39-27 at halftime.
In other games
Geibel Catholic was a 59-43 winner over visiting Mapletown in Class A Section 2. No game details were reported by press time.
