It’s still very early in the season, but Fort Cherry picked up what could turn out to be a key road win in Class A Section 1 Monday when the Rangers won 3-1 at California.

Winning pitcher Ryan Huey fired a two-hit complete game with nine strikeouts. He did not issue a walk.

The Rangers (1-0, 3-0) scored single runs in each of the first three innings and Huey made sure they were enough. Matt Sieg had a pair of RBI, one on a groundout the other on a single. Tyler Wolfe drove in Fort Cherry’s second run with a single.

California (2-1, 2-4), the WPIAL runner-up a year ago, scored its lone run in the sixth. The Trojans’ Caden Monticelli pitched a fine game, allowing only four hits and two walks. He struck out seven.

Charleroi 18, Bentworth 1

Charleroi scored in every inning en route to an 18-1 win over host Bentworth in a five-inning Class 2A Section 1 game.

Dylan Klinger led Charleroi’s 11-hit attack by going 2-for-3 with two doubles and four RBI. Brock Henderson and Blake Koteles also doubled. Henderson went 3-for-3 and Kaden Woods drove in three runs.

John Scott had a double for Bentworth (0-3, 0-4).

Carmichaels 11, Springdale 2

Carmichaels broke open a close game late and defeated visiting Springdale 11-2 in a non-section game.

Carmichaels (4-0) led 2-0 before scoring six times in the pivotal fifth inning.

The Mikes’ leadoff hitter Dom Colarusso doubled and drove in four runs, and Robbie Wilson-Jones hit two doubles.

The Hillers (2-0, 3-1) were locked in a 2-2 tie when they erupted for four runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Winning pitcher J.R. Rieg and reliever Jackson Burt combined on a six-hitter. Burt earned a save.

Chartiers-Houston 9, Beth-Center 3

Chartiers-Houston picked up its first victory of the season, a 9-3 Class 2A Section 1 win at Beth-Center.

The Bucs (1-0, 1-3) scored three runs in the first inning and four in the seventh, and did just enough in between to keep Beth-Center (1-2, 3-3) out of striking distance.

Four Chartiers-Houston pitchers combined on a two-hitter and struck out 11. Keegan Kosek struck out five in two hitless innings of relief.

The Bucs’ Anthony Romano went 3-for-4 with two doubles, Aaron Walsh was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs.

Ethan Varesko drove in both runs for Beth-Center.

Latrobe 12, Ringgold 3
