Point Park adjunct professors vote to unionize

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Part-time professors at Point Park University in Pittsburgh have voted to unionize.
The United Steelworkers’ Adjunct Faculty Association got permission in April from the National Labor Relations Board to hold the mail-in vote.
The union says Point Park has 314 professors, and most of them participated in the balloting held from June 10 to 24. The 172-79 vote in favor of unionizing was announced Wednesday.
The Adjunct Faculty Association organized a similar vote at Duquesne University, another private, liberal arts school in the city and part-time professors there voted to unionize in 2012.
But that school, which is Catholic, has appealed the results of that vote by arguing the school has a faith-based exemption from NLRB jurisdiction.
Point Park officials have said they’ll respect the outcome of the part-time professors’ vote.
