The Ringgold Education Association and the school district reached a tentative agreement, which is subject to ratification by the teachers and the school board, to avert a strike.

Details of the proposed agreement will not be released until the REA and school board vote to ratify the contract Aug. 20, according to a statement issued by Ringgold Education Association Thursday.

Ringgold’s 215 educators have been working without a contract for 19 months.

In May, teachers overwhelmingly rejected a fact-finders recommendation for their new contract.

At that time, negotiations were at a stalemate over the district’s proposal to end the practice of offering health insurance to certain family members of teachers and because 70 to 80 percent of teachers would not receive a salary increase.

Teachers authorized a strike in February, but never scheduled one.
