Monongahela Valley Hospital and United Steelworkers Local 8041 have a new three-year contract which began Tuesday.

According to a press release from the hospital, union members approved the pact by a nearly 3 to 1 margin during voting sessions held Thursday. The new contract runs through June 30, 2017.

Local 8041 represents about half of the hospital’s 1,200 employees including technical staff; nursing assistants; unit clerks; laundry; nutrition and food service; housekeeping; and maintenance personnel.

Nurses at Monongahela Valley Hospital are not members of the union.

“By ratifying the contract prior to the June 30 expiration of their previous contract, union leadership and members of Local 8041 are to be commended for once again demonstrating their commitment to our hospital and most importantly, our patients and this community by ensuring that they will continue to receive the highest quality of care,” said Louis J. Panza Jr., president and CEO of MVH.

Louis Goodman, vice president of Human Resources and lead negotiator for the hospital, said wages and health care provisions were a major focus of the new contract.

Details of the new agreement were not provided.

Union leaders recommended approval of the contract to the membership during informational sessions on Wednesday.

“Union leadership respected the hospital’s professionalism throughout the talks and we are grateful that we could reach a mutually beneficial agreement,” said Rich McGinn, acting president of Local 8041.
