Pittsburgh hospital finds Legionella again

PITTSBURGH (AP) — UPMC’s flagship hospital in Pittsburgh has moved 11 patients after infection control workers found the bacteria that causes Legionnaire’s disease in sinks in three patient rooms earlier this week.
UPMC officials said Wednesday that no patients have tested positive for Legionnaires’ disease, a potentially lethal strain of pneumonia.
Hospital officials say the patients in a 10th-floor pulmonary medicine unit where the bacteria was found were moved to other parts of UPMC Presbyterian and are being monitored.
The bacteria was discovered in hospital ice machines in May, and officials say the bug contributed to one patient’s death and sickened two late last year.
UPMC says it overhauled and sterilized ice machines throughout its 20 hospitals and is aggressively searching for the bacteria.
