NEWBERRY TOWNSHIP (AP) – Authorities say a train collided with a car at a private railroad crossing in York County, killing a woman and sending a man and young child to the hospital.

The York Daily Record reports that the couple and the child were traveling from Mechanicsburg to a gathering on the Susquehanna River in Newberry Township when the accident happened around 4:45 p.m. Saturday.

Newberry Township Police Sgt. Richard Rocco says that the train blew its whistle, but there are no flashing lights or gates at the crossing.

The condition of the man and child were not available, but Rocco says the child was awake and conscious.

Norfolk Southern spokesman Dave Pidgeon says the train was heading from Lancaster to Harrisburg and that all 45 of its freight cars were empty.
