Waynesburg on a roll, wins third straight game

Jason Propst had 19 points and Waynesburg University rallied to beat host Wittenberg, 77-69, in the opening round of the Charles B. Zimmerman men’s basketball tournament Monday.
Thomas Ellis came off the bench to add 15 points, while BJ Durham had 10 for the Yellow Jackets, who trailed 30-27 at the half.
Waynesburg, which has now won its last three to pull its record to 4-5, won the game at the foul line, sinking 24 of 28 free throws.
Jaelin Williams led Wittenburg (3-6) with 15 points, while Sam Collins and Chad Roy had 13 each in the loss.
Utica 78, W&J 60: Mike Resnik scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, but W&J fell, 78-60, against Utica at the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Tournament, hosted by St. John Fisher.
Resnik made 10 field goals and 8 of 11 free throw attempts to finish with 28 points, 16 of which came in the first half. Mitch Locher added 13 and Adam Robison grabbed nine rebounds for the Presidents.
Utica (3-5) jumped out the the early lead, but a late surge in the first half drew W&J to within three points with 1:36 before the break, but the Pioneers scored six straight to take a nine-point lead into the break.
The two teams traded baskets in the opening minutes of the second half before Utica went on a 13-0 run over a three-minute span to pull away. Conor Maisch led the Pioneers with 18 points, including three three-pointers, and Ivan Iton added 13. Utica’s bench scored 39 points to assist a starting five depleted by foul trouble. Utica made 11 of 20 three-point attempts and shot 48.1 percent from the field. The Pioners also sank 15 of 19 free throws.
The Presidents (1-9) face St. John Fisher today at 3 p.m.
