Trinity girls take title at Greensburg Salem tip-off

Sierra Kotchman scored 21 points, Mary Dunn had a double-double and Trinity shut down Greensburg Salem in the second half for a 63-42 victory Saturday night in the championship game of the Lions’ tournament.
Trinity led by only 26-23 at halftime, but the Hillers outscored the hosts 14-4 in the third quarter and then protected the advantage with some strong free-throw shooting over the final eight minutes. Kotchman was 6-for-6 at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
Dunn scored 19 points and had double-figure rebounds, Rachel Phillis scored 12 points and freshman Alayna Cappelli had 11 points and played a strong defensive game.
Claire Oberdorf took game scoring honors with 26 points but the Lions were held to just 19 points after halftime.
Charleroi 53, Carmichaels 34:
Charleroi outscored Carmichaels 17-2 in the first quarter and then cruised to a 53-34 victory in the championship game of the Cougars’ tournament.
Kaitlyn Riley scored six of her team-high 15 points in the pivotal first quarter for the Cougars. Freshman Sierra Short, the tournament MVP, scored 13 points for Charleroi and Ayslyn Lee contributed 10.
Caroline Cree paced Carmichaels with 15 points.
Chartiers-Houston 52, South Allegheny 30:
Chartiers-Houston’s Alex Williamson almost outscored the entire South Allegheny team as the Bucs rolled to a 52-30 victory over the Gladiators in the consolation game of the Brownsville tournament.
The victory was the first in the career of new Chartiers-Houston coach Laura Montecalvo. Williamson had much to do with that first victory as she scored a game-high 28 points.
Jules Vulcano also reached double figures, scoring 12 points.
South Allegheny was led by Abby Dranko, who scored 26 points. The Gladiators had only two players who scored.
Bentworth 44, Mapletown 30:
Grace Marchezak scored 12 points to power Bentworth to a 44-30 victory over Mapeltown in the consolation of the Avella tournament.
Tori Cicci added 10 points for the Bearcats (101).
Madison Bogden had 13 rebounds for the Maples (0-2).
Knoch 49, Washington 33:
A balanced scoring attack paced Knoch to a 49-33 victory over Trinity in the championship game of Freeport tournament.
Sara Armahizer led Knoch (2-0) with 10 points.
Taylor Ellis scored a game-high 12 points for Washington (1-1).
Burgettstown 47, Avella 42:
Katie Tarr scored 13 points and Burgettstown used a huge advantage at the free-throw line to defeat Avella 47-42 in the championship game of the Eagles’ tournament.
Burgettstown made 26 of 48 free throws compared to Avella’s 7-for-14. All five starters for Avella fouled out. Burgettstown rallied for a 24-23 deficit at halftime.
Jade Georgetti paced Avelal with 13 points.
Belle Vernon 60, Canon-McMillan 53:
Britt Rathway scored 16 points to help send Belle Vernon to a 60-53 victory over Canon-McMillan in the Belle Vernon tournament finale.
Kaitlyn Slagus added 15 points and Sam Mendicino 12 for the Leopards. Rathway was 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
Cheyenne Trest led the Big Macs with 19 points and Danielle Parker chipped in with 18. Rebecca Turney added 10 points.
Monessen 38, Clairton 20:
Teraee Bradford and Tashyra Reid combined for 24 points to power Monessen to a 38-20 victory over Clairton in the consolation game of the Charleroi tournament.
Monessen forged a 10-point halftime lead and held Clairton to just nine second-half points.
Bradford scored a game-high 13 points and Reid followed with 11. They combined to make 12 free throws.
Central Valley 37, Fort Cherry 31:
A slow start and some erratic free-throw shooting proved costly for Fort Cherry as the Rangers were edged by Central Valley in the Montour tournament.
Central Valley (1-1) raced to a 16-3 lead after one quarter and Fort Cherry (0-2) was never able to recover, though the Rangers did pull to within five points in the fourth quarter. Fort Cherry, however, made only 12 of 24 free throws which hurt its comeback bid.
Tina Bellhy led Fort Cherry in scoring with 10 points.
California 82, Valley 14:
California evened its record with an 82-14 thumping of Valley in the consolation game of the Slippery Rock tournament.
Lindsey Huhn led Cal with a game-high 21 points. She was followed in double figures by Bail Vig (16 points) and Kat Pankratz (11).
The Trojans led 22-3 after one quarter and 48-9 at halftime, then held Valley scoreless in the third quarter.
Waynesburg 45, West Greene 27:
Celine Monica and Kirsten Garber combined for 33 points to lead Waynesburg past West Greene, 45-27, in the Waynesburg Tipoff Tournament.
Monica had 17 and Garber 16 for the Raiders (1-1), who led 30-16 at halftime.
Marissa Rode poured in 14 for the Pioneers (0-2).

Seton-La Salle 50, Peters Township 43:
A slow start and some poor free-throw shooting proved costly for Peters Township as it lost to Seton-La Salle 50-43 in the championship game of the Indians’ tournament.
Peters Township fell behind 16-11 after one quarter and hurt its chances of a building a comeback by making only four of 12 free throws. Seton-La Salle wasn’t much better at the line, converting just seven of 18 free throws.
Ryan Nokus took game scoring honors with 17 points for Seton-La Salle. John Marzina followed with 11 points.
Nick Valentic tossed in 16 points for PT and Tim Swoope had 13.
California 61, Geibel 49:
California built a 17-point halftime lead and then cruised to a 61-49 in the championship game of the Gators’ tournament in Connellsville.
Leading the way for Cal, which led 40-23 at intermission, was Tray Matthews with a game-high 26 points. That included four three-pointers. Kass Taylor followed with 20 points.
Geibel received 20 points from Kyle Toth and 13 from Bailey Miller.
Chartiers-Houston 64, McGuffey 58:
Alec Ferrari scored a game-high 25 and Chartiers-Houston scored 30 fourth-quarter points to down McGuffey, 64-58, in the championship game of the McGuffey tournament.
A.J. Myers added 18 points for the Bucs (2-0) and Spencer Terling added 12.
Zach Maxwell had 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Highlanders (1-1). Damian McCloskey chipped in with 17.
Waynesburg 55, Avella 26:
Mitch Warman had a double-double to help Waynesburg down Avella 55-26 in the Waynesburg tournament. Warman had 12 points and 18 rebounds, and Dom Sarra scored 11 and pulled down nine rebounds.
Avella fell to 0-2.
Trinity 73, Burgettstown 63:
Four players scored in double figures to pace Trinity to a 73-63 win over Burgettstown in the Canon-McMillan tournament.
Nick Moretti led the way with 18 points for the Hillers (1-1). Joe Koroly and Dylan Kern each had 12 and Adam Raggi 11.
Dylan Dhans led Burgettstown (0-2) with 16 points. Logan Triebsch had 15 and Hunter Lecker 11.
Beth-Center 48, Mapletown 18:
Beth-Center outscored Mapletown 17-0 in the second quarter and held the cold-shooting Maples to just three first-half points en route to a 48-18 victory in the consolation game of the Geibel tournament.
Tyler Ross, with 10 points, was the only player to score in double figures for Beth-Center, which led 26-3 at halftime. Mapletown’s Ben Boone scored a game-high 11 points.
Brashear 55, Fort Cherry 28:
Mike Zellous scored 13 points and Brashear made seven three-point field goals during a 55-28 victory over Fort Cherry in the consolation game of the Keystone Oaks tournament.
Rob McAnany scored nine points for Fort Cherry, which was held to 10 first-half points.
Chartiers Valley 110, Monessen 70:
Matt McConnell scored 31 points and Chartiers Valley hit 18 three-point field goals to blow past Monessen, 110-70, in the Upper St. Clair tournament.
Ed Flohr had 23, Jake Ritson 22 and Ross Wilkerson 16 for the Colts, who led 55-23 at halftime.
Lavalle Rush paced Monessen with 23 points and Luke Beveridge added 18.
