Junior guards Khalil Jabbie and Jake Jacubec combined for 41 points and 11 steals Saturday afternoon to lead California University to a 72-70 come-from-behind victory over host Mansfield in a PSAC game.
Jabbie scored a season-high 24 points, including 20 in the second half, when Cal overcame a nine-point deficit in the final eight minutes. Jabbie was 11-for-11 from the free-throw line and made a jump shot with 27 seconds remaining that gave the Vulcans a 71-70 lead.
Jacubec scored 17 points and had five steals.
After Jabbie’s go-ahead score, Mansfield (2-5, 4-6) called a timeout to set up a final shot but Cal’s Drew Cook came up with the Vulcans’ 16th steal of the game with six seconds remaining. Cook converted one of two free throws to give the Vulcans a 72-70 lead, and Mansfield missed a potential game-winning three-point shot as time expired.
Mansfield led 63-54 with eight minutes left, but Cal put together an 8-1 run to close to within two points. The Vulcans didn’t take the lead Jabbie’s basket in the closing seconds, which came after a three-pointer by Jacubec that brought the Vulcans to within one point of the Mountaineers.
Richard Smith scored 10 points for Cal, and Jabbie had a solid all-around game with six steals and three assists. The Vulcans made 22 of 25 free throws.
Mansfield’s Joe Bell was the game’s leading scorer with 24 points. Da’Quan Jones had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Ralik Wise had 10 points.
Cal is off until Jan. 3 when it plays at Lock Haven.
