The Observer-Reporter is fortunate to have a responsive readership eager to assist in identifying old photos from our archives. Most of the time, if we haven’t a clue who the people are in one of our Mystery Photos or where the picture was taken, some of the tens of thousands of people who have the paper delivered or read it online can supply valuable information and contribute to the historical record of our region.

And sometimes, those mysteries cannot be solved. This week’s Mystery Photo is one of those. Not a single person emailed or called with so much as a wild guess as to who these little folks could be.

Because this photo came from our Waynesburg office, we think the children were in a Greene County kindergarten. Judging by their clothing, we think they might now be in their early to mid 70s.

In desperation last week, calls were made to older Waynesburg residents in hopes of finding someone with as little as an inkling or suspicion, but to no avail. Perhaps the only way the puzzle might be cracked is if one of these 10 children were to recognize himself or herself.

Without that information, this photograph will be filed away for some future generation to ponder this moment, frozen in time, when little boys wore suspenders and played with cars and trucks, and little girls had tea parties with miniature cups and saucers.
