Scott Tarris, a master gardener at Country Farms Nursery, a professional design service in Greensburg, presented a program on “Landscaping Design” to the members of the Rices Landing Town & Country Garden Club.

He explained elements of successful landscape design introduces basic art concepts such as color, form, scale, texture and line.

Two components of landscape design are softscape, which integrates plants and trees into the environment, and hardscape, which integrates items such as a patio, deck, water feature, sidewalk, wall or fence into the design.

Tarris said there is the rule of one third and two thirds that is followed in creating a design: one third evergreen and two thirds deciduous plantings.

The presentation featured the evolution of landscape design in the 1700s through the 1900s. Members viewed many designs, illustrations, and photos of formal and informal gardens.

“Creating designs that work for people and their lifestyle is the purpose of landscape design,” said Tarris.

Tarris is a graduate of West Virginia University with a degree in horticulture.

Special guests at the meeting were Douglas Kowalewski and his parents, Robert and Rita of Crucible. He is the club’s 2014 scholarship recipient and has completed his first semester at Gettysburg College where he is majoring in history and psychology.

As a member of the Gettysburg College Jazz Ensemble, he will be traveling to Istanbul, Italy and France this summer. He also plays tenor saxophone with the school’s wind symphony. Kowalewski is a graduate of Carmichaels Area High School.
