PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Mother Nature dumped as much as nine inches of snow on parts of Pennsylvania overnight, with the heaviest totals occurring in the center and eastern parts of the commonwealth — and forecasters say there is more to come.
The National Weather Service says nine inches was reported Friday night into Saturday in Coolbaugh Township in Monroe County, with eight inches reported in parts of Berks, Lehigh, Northampton and Schuylkill counties. Seven inches or more was reported in Dauphin and Bucks counties.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation reduced speeds to 45 mph on some roadways but lifted the restrictions Saturday morning. The Delaware River Port Authority reduced speed limits to 25 mph on bridges crossing the Delaware River between New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Philadelphia International Airport instituted a “ground delay” traffic management program that led to about two dozen cancellations.
Forecasters are expecting more snow from a system coming in Sunday night, and perhaps more soon after that.
Meteorologist Mitchell Gaines of the National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, N.J., reports that another system coming in Sunday night into Monday is expected to drop another inch or two across most of eastern Pennsylvania with a couple of inches also expected in central and western areas of the commonwealth.
A system that may move up the coast could bring even more a day later, but “there’s a high degree of uncertainty about how much snow we could get for the Monday night and Tuesday time frame,” Gaines said.
Drivers should be wary of slick spots forming overnight as some areas of black ice are likely as wet roads freeze when the temperature drops below freezing, he said.
