PHILADELPHIA (AP) – An imprisoned former state senator from Philadelphia has been hospitalized with heart problems.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Vincent Fumo has been moved from his cell in Ashland, Ky., to a nearby hospital after doctors discovered three artery blockages.

Fumo’s son, Vincent Fumo II, confirmed the hospitalization but said he didn’t have any details. The Inquirer reported doctors have recommended Fumo undergo heart bypass surgery.

The once powerful Democratic lawmaker has been serving a five-year sentence after being convicted in 2009 of defrauding the Senate, a neighborhood nonprofit and a seaport museum.

A call to Fumo’s attorney was not immediately returned Thursday evening.

The 69-year-old Fumo is scheduled to be released later this year.
