Two area railroad projects are among 24 across Pennsylvania’s that will receive funding being administered by PennDOT’s Bureau of Rail Freight, Ports and Waterways.

The projects, which include one in Washington County and another in Brownsville, Fayette County, were announced Friday by Gov. Tom Corbett to improve businesses’ rail access, upgrade rail infrastructure and provide much-needed repairs with the aid of a nearly $18.6 million state investment.

According to a press release from the governor’s office, Wheeling & Lake Erie Railroad will receive $1.1 million to construct a new rail siding in Mt. Pleasant Township.

In August, Wheeling & Lake Erie completed a new 4.4-mile rail line linking the MarkWest Liberty & Midstream processing plant in Chariters Township to global markets for natural gas byproducts.

In Brownsville, Brownsville Marine Products is receiving $250,000 to install a rail spur and conveyor system at its barge-building facility on the Monongahela River.
