ALTOONA (AP) – The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s takeover of a central Pennsylvania health system is set to take effect.
The board of directors of the Altoona Regional Health System voted last month to approve the takeover, which was scheduled to be formally announced Monday.
About 2,000 workers have signed a petition asking the hospital’s board to reconsider, largely because of concerns that patients covered by Highmark Inc. will be shut out of the hospital’s services if it merges with UPMC.
The state attorney general has said it must also approve the deal, and while it’s unclear whether that has happened formally, the office has not taken steps to block the takeover.
UPMC officials have said no further approvals are needed for the deal to take effect.
