Natural gas reserves lie under Pittsburgh streets
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Natural gas maps show considerable reserves beneath Pittsburgh, but that’s where they’ll stay, at least for the time being.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Sunday (http://bit.ly/1agAfjJ ) that the reddest spot on a heat map of western Pennsylvania is the Pittsburgh metropolitan area.
Drillers say they’re not looking at bringing in rigs, given the region’s urban development and surface topography.
The City Council passed a ban on hydrofracking three years ago that no one has sought to challenge.
Other areas of Allegheny County are being drilled, however, and the county is considering whether to allow it beneath a promising 1,200-acre property known as Deer Lakes.
