PITTSBURGH — Colonial Modern Furniture said Friday it is closing its Pittsburgh outlet store at 4921 Clairton Blvd. (Route 51 South) in the Baldwin-Whitehall area, due to the sale of the building which it has owned since 1961.

A store closing sale at that location starts Oct. 17.

Colonial Modern said in a press release its flagship store at 2810 Washington Road (Route 19 South), in McMurray, will remain open.

Colonial Modern traces its roots to the 1940s, when Max Alfery started a company with his brother-in-law, Frank Dorfner, called A&D Furniture. As Alfery’s sons, Max Jr., and Joe, entered the business, they decided to venture out on their own and launched Colonial Gallery.

The original Colonial Gallery store was located in a house on Route 51 in Baldwin-Whitehall. In 1965, an addition was put on the house, expanding the showroom to 22,000 square feet, with Max Alfery Jr. as president. In 1990, Karen Sauers, Alfery’s daughter, joined the company and began to help Max operate the company.

In 2001, the company bought the current 23,000-square-foot store on Route 19 in McMurray. In 2005, Max and Karen Sauers became sole owners of the company and started the transformation to the current format of Colonial Modern Furniture, carrying “colonial, modern and everything in between.”
