Preparing for air conditioning season and an increased demand for electricity, West Penn Power is inspecting power lines and doing maintenance on equipment in Western and Central Pennsylvania.

West Penn Power, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. of Akron, Ohio, is inspecting about 1,800 miles of transmission lines, substation equipment and other possible utility issues and trimming thousands of trees.

West Penn serves 105,000 residential customers in Washington County and 18,000 in Greene. Statewide, it has 720,000 customers in 24 counties.

In the region, crews also are:

• Constructing a two-mile distribution line in the Manifold area, Washington County, to accommodate commercial and residential growth.

• Installing a transformer at the Enon Substation near Ryerson Station, Greene County, to increase the substation’s transmission capacity to support coal mines and benefit customers.
