CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – Coal company Murray Energy donated $250,000 to a business-oriented political action committee in West Virginia.

The West Virginia Business & Industry Council’s PAC noted the donation in a state campaign finance report Sept. 29. The committee is named Moving Forward West Virginia BICPAC.

The council endorsed 77 state House and Senate candidates. All but eight are Republicans.

Murray Energy is one of the biggest coal companies in the country. It operates 13 underground longwall mining systems and 46 continuous mining units in Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, Utah and West Virginia.

Company CEO Robert Murray is an outspoken critic of President Barack Obama’s energy policies on coal.

The St. Clairsville, Ohio-based company sued the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over a proposal to stem carbon emissions from existing coal-fired power plants.
