Main St. Hot Dogs opens today in city
The dog days of August are taking on an added meaning in Washington this week.
Main St. Hot Dogs is ready to launch – and lunch – at the corner of South Main and East Maiden streets. It shares the building occupied by Vocelli Pizza, taking up the space previously used by Le Bleu Crepes, now closed.
And talk about franking privileges – the shop will have a soft opening from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today that will feature free hot dogs. The official opening is Friday.
“We’re really excited,” the manager, Brittany Geiger, of Washington, said with relish. “We’ll have dogs, french fries. We’ll be similar to Shorty’s with twists, like slaw dogs.”
Shorty’s is a high standard, of course – an iconic diner located on nearby West Chestnut Street. Yet, Main St. Hot Dogs hopes to stake its claim in a dog-eat-dog world.
The new shop’s address is 192 S. Main St., but it actually fronts East Maiden. It remodeled the 500 square feet occupied by Le Bleu Crepes, which opened in the summer of 2013 and shut down about a year later. Main St. Hot Dogs will have indoor seating for about 15 and an outdoor dining area.
Geiger wasn’t sure of the shop owner’s name. Seckin Ablak owns the Vocelli next door and ones in Canonsburg, Peters Township and Weirton, W.Va.
Hours will be 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to either 7 or 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. “We’ll have to see how that goes,” said Geiger said, whose shop will be closed Sundays.
