MOON TOWNSHIP – Chevron Corp. is laying off 162 workers at its Appalachian business unit here.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported Thursday that the cuts will affect about 23 percent of the 700 employees at the oil and gas exploration unit, about 15 miles west of Pittsburgh. Chevron said the restructuring began in November.

Spokesman Trip Oliver said: “Chevron is taking steps to streamline its organization and ensure our workforce is the right size for expected activity levels in this region, which are lower than originally anticipated.”

The San Ramon, Calif.-based company once planned to build a regional headquarters in Moon, but delayed that project indefinitely in July.

Oliver said Chevron still “will continue to make significant investments in the development of natural gas from shale in this area.”
