HOUSTON – Oilfield services company Baker Hughes Inc. said the number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. this week declined by 13 to 864.
The Houston-based firm reported Friday that 662 rigs were exploring for oil and 202 for natural gas. There were 1,925 active rigs a year ago, when oil prices were about twice as high.
Among major oil- and gas-producing states, Louisiana gained four rigs and California and Oklahoma each increased by one.
Texas lost 11 rigs, Colorado, Kansas and New Mexico were down by two, and Alaska, North Dakota and Ohio each decreased by one.
Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Arkansas, Utah and Wyoming were all unchanged.
The U.S. rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981 and bottomed at 488 in 1999.
