Small businesses are standing tall in Pennsylvania, according to data compiled by the Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy.

The office on Thursday released its annual Small Business Profiles, which are derived from data from government statistical agencies. Some of the more interesting profiles show:

• The state’s small businesses represent 98.2 percent of all businesses with employees, and employ about 46.9 percent of the nation’s private-sector workforce.

• Businesses with fewer than 100 employees have the largest share of small business employment.

• The health care and social assistance industry has the most small business jobs, 390,952 jobs. Accommodation and food services is second (280,109 jobs) and manufacturing is third (263,830).

• The number of minority-owned companies increased by 36.7 percent between 2007 and 2012.

• Small businesses made up 89.1 percent of Pennsylvania exporting companies and generated 35.6 percent of Pennsylvania’s total known export value.
