PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Steelers and Chevron are seeking nominations of teachers in Intermediate Unit 1 and Allegheny Intermediate Unit to be honored in the “Leaders in the Classroom” program.

The program, announced this week, presents an opportunity to recognize teachers in the two units who are making a significant difference in the lives of students by providing engaging instruction and curriculum, encouraging lifelong learning and inspiring a passion for education beyond the classroom.

The program is supported by the two Intermediate Units as well as the Grable Foundation.

“Chevron is very excited to work with the Pittsburgh Steelers, The Grable Foundation, IU1 and AIU to, not only recognize exceptional teachers, but to inspire the sharing of ideas by highlighting innovative strategies that engage students in ways that make them excited to learn and connect that learning to a future job or new educational pathway,” said Trip Oliver, spokesman for Chevron Appalachia LLC.

Sixteen teachers from the region will be recognized during each of the Steelers’ 2016 regular-season home games and will receive a donation to purchase classroom materials to support their unique approach to “remaking learning.” Each winner will receive two tickets to the Steelers’ game Jan. 1 against Cleveland.

“Exceptional and innovative teachers are making a significant difference in the lives of students across the region every day by providing engaging instruction, encouraging lifelong learning, and inspiring a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math,” said Charles F. Mahoney, Intermediate Unit 1 executive director. “These teachers have a tremendous impact on preparing their students for future career and/or college pathways. This partnership recognizes these outstanding teachers and enhances the important role they play in their students’ lives.”

The Leaders in the Classroom program was enabled by the Appalachia Partnership Initiative, a $20 million social investment launched by Chevron in 2014. API is dedicated to preparing students and adult learners with the problem-solving and advanced technical skills required for careers in energy and advanced manufacturing. In addition to Chevron, API partners are the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, RAND Corp., and the Grable Foundation. To date, API has encouraged an additional $6 million in social investments from regional foundations and corporations.
