A culinary institution is closing in Peters Township.

The Eat’n Park at 3528 Washington Road will cease operations at 3 p.m. Sunday, after nearly 56 years of operation, It opened for business in 1960.

That will leave Peters without an Eat’n Park for the first time since the Eisenhower administration. But the void will last only nine days, as a new Place for Smiles is undergoing finishing touches a quarter-mile to the north for a 6 a.m. launch March 2. It will be at 3380 Washington Road (Route 19), at the intersection with Valley Brook Road.

The new Eat’n Park will be much bigger than its predecessor, with about 7,400 square feet, 237 seats and 90 parking spaces. The restaurant, Northwest Savings Bank and a third business — not yet signed — will comprise Peters Township Marketplace, a $4 million, single-building center.
