Range Resources Corp. named a new executive to lead its Southern Marcellus Shale division.

The Fort Worth, Texas-based oil and gas exploration company said Dennis Degner, 43, who has been the division’s vice president of operations since June 2014, will be vice president for the division, which is based in Southpointe.

The announcement was made by Range’s Chief Operating Officer Ray Walker during a presentation at Wednesday’s session of the DUG East Conference, an oil and gas industry meeting in Pittsburgh.

“I’m excited to announce that Dennis will be leading up our Southern Marcellus Shale Division,” Walker said. “He’s been groomed for this position, in many ways, since we recruited him to Range six years ago. He grew up in this industry living through the beginnings of the unconventional era and has seen a lot. He has all of the technical smarts you’d want to see in this position, but more than anything else Dennis is great with people, a good family man, and he’s committed to doing things the right way.”

Degner said he’s looking forward to the opportunity to lead the division, which has about 400 employees.

While acknowledging the current downturn in the natural gas extraction industry in the area’s Marcellus and Utica shales, Degner said “it’s going to be business as usual” as he takes the helm. He noted an uptick in natural gas prices over the past few months “is bringing some optimism in the marketplace.”

A resident of Upper St. Clair, Degner is a graduate of Texas A&M University, where he earned a degree in agricultural engineering. He joined Range in 2010, and has 20 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, and prior to joining Range, worked primarily in unconventional shale regions in Texas, Louisiana and New Mexico.

He succeeds John Applegath, who is now vice president for Range’s Midcontinent/Northern Marcellus Shale division.
