Cal U. introduces online nurse educator master’s program
CALIFORNIA – California University of Pennsylvania is enrolling students now for its 100 percent online program in nursing education.
New this fall, the online Master of Science in Nursing: Nursing Education degree program addresses the nationwide shortage of nursing professionals who are prepared to educate the next generation of nurses.
The university said in a news release, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing reports faculty shortages at U.S. nursing schools limit the number of nurses that can be trained, even as the need for skilled nurses continues to grow. As the baby boom generation ages and requires more healthcare services, there will be an even greater need to educate registered nurses.
Cal U.’s 100 percent online program allows nurses to earn the MSN: Nurse Educator degree while continuing to work full time. Students take two courses per semester (summer, fall and spring) and complete the 36-credit program in about two years.
The nursing education program prepares nurse educators to work in academic or healthcare settings. It includes core graduate-level courses, advanced clinical practice, and specialty courses in:
• Curriculum design and development
• Teaching and instructional strategies
• Assessment and evaluation methods
Students also complete a 150-hour practicum. Guided by a “preceptor,” or skilled practitioner/educator, they apply their skills and build confidence by designing, implementing and evaluating an educational activity within the practice setting.
The new program is derived from Cal U.’s Master of Science in Nursing, which is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Graduates can seek Certified Nurse Educator certification from the National League for Nursing.
Courses for Cal U.’s new MSN: Nursing Education program begin this fall. For details, visit www.calu.edu or email Cal U. Global Online at calugo@calu.edu.
