Gasoline prices in Western Pennsylvania dropped another 8.5 cents a gallon this week, the 11th consecutive weekly decline.

The average cost of a gallon of unleaded self-serve plummeted to $2.525, down from $2.610 a week ago, according to a report Thursday from AAA East Central.

Gas is 61.1 cents cheaper than it was 11 weeks ago, when the average stood at $3.136. This week’s price is 21.6 cents lower than it was a year ago.

Washington’s average dropped precipitously again this week, by 11.2 cents, to $2.523 – down from $2.635. The price paid in Washington ranks 11th among 22 Western Pennsylvania cities and towns listed by AAA.

New Castle has the lowest average ($2.331); Warren ($2.688) the highest.

Pennsylvania’s average dropped by five cents to $2.54, but the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast region is still one of the more expensive regions nationally. The nationwide figure fell seven cents to $2.30 – 24 cents lower than a month ago and 16 cents below the figure of a year earlier.

About 10 states have average prices below $2.00 per gallon, AAA reported. The agency anticipates decreased demand in January, when OPEC begins production cuts with the hope that a change in global supply will bump oil prices higher.
